Grange congratulates Olympics-bound Bobsleigh teams

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, has congratulated Jamaica’s Bobsleigh teams who have qualified for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Jamaica will have at least three teams at the Milano Cortina Games: a two-man team, a four-man team and a women’s monobob.

The two-man team will come from Nimroy Turgott, Joel Fearon and Junior Harris while Andrae Dacres, Junior Harris, Tyquendo Tracey and Joel Fearon form the four-man team.

The women’s monobob features Mica Moore.

The Jamaican two-woman team is ranked as first alternate and will also participate if another country withdraws from the Games.

Minister Grange described the Bobsleigh teams’ qualification for the Olympics as “another incredible achievement in Jamaica’s sports history.”

According to the Minister, “Jamaica’s winter athletes continue to do impressive things. Our bobsleigh teams are consistent qualifiers for the Olympics and must now be seen as real contenders especially after their recent exploits in Canada.”

Jamaica defeated their hosts in November at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation’s North American Cup to win the island’s first gold medal at an international bobsleigh competition.

Jamaica’s bobsleigh culture is quite rich with Hollywood movie Cool Runnings chronicling the nation’s early exploits.

Minister Grange further expressed her pride in the athletes, stating, “These young men and women have not only showcased their remarkable talents but have also inspired a new generation of Jamaican winter sports enthusiasts.”

She highlighted the importance of governmental support and investment in winter sports, emphasizing initiatives aimed at developing training facilities and funding for talented athletes.

“Our commitment to nurturing local talent is unwavering,” Minister Grange added.

As Jamaica prepares for the upcoming Olympics, the nation has also increased its focus on sports science and performance analysis. The introduction of specialized coaching and nutrition programs aims to enhance the athletes’ capabilities and ensure peak performance during the Games.

The Minister urged fans to rally behind the teams, declaring, “Let us unite as a country to support our bobsleigh athletes as they seek to bring home more medals and write their names in the annals of Olympic history.”

Public enthusiasm is already building, with events planned to celebrate the teams' journey to Milano Cortina, fostering a sense of national pride in the face of international competition.

The 2026 Winter Olympics begins on February 6.
