Berger Paints Jamaica Hosts Two-Day Contractor’s Academy: Empowering Industry Professionals with Product Knowledge and Live Demonstrations

Berger Paints Jamaica Limited (BPJL) recently hosted a transformative two-day Contractor’s Academy at its Head Office in Kingston, aimed at deepening product knowledge and sharpening application skills among contractors. The event brought together professionals from across the construction and renovation sectors for an immersive training experience, culminating in official certification from Berger Paints Jamaica.

Over the two days, attendees participated in detailed sessions covering product usage, surface preparation, and application best practices, led by Berger's technical experts. Live demonstrations allowed participants to get hands-on with Berger’s product line, applying techniques in real-time and engaging in peer learning. The contractors in attendance were able to get firsthand experience with a range of products including Berger’s Alkali Sealer, Trowel-On, Weatherproof Ultra, to name a few.

One of the major highlights was the in-depth demonstration and usage of Berger’s Magicote Low Sheen, an interior coating known for its excellent coverage, smooth finish, and low maintenance for the budget conscious consumer. Contractors experienced the ease of the product's superior application and saw firsthand the level of quality it delivers. Magicote Low Sheen is excellent for use in moderate traffic areas, such as family rooms, hallways, and children’s rooms, due to its easy to clean nature and attractive array of colour options.

Dwaine Williams, General Manager of Berger Paints Jamaica, emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to industry development.

“The Contractor’s Academy is part of our long-term vision to uplift the entire painting and finishing industry in Jamaica. By equipping professionals with technical knowledge and hands-on experience, we’re not just promoting our products, we're investing in better-built homes, commercial spaces, and communities. The overwhelmingly positive response to our products throughout the years, is a testament to what happens when quality products meet trained hands.”

The academy concluded with a certification ceremony, where participants received official recognition for their completion of the programme, equipping them to deliver higher standards of workmanship in their projects.

Contractors from a variety of entities took part, including Alfasure, CICC (Chinese International Contractors Company), Cardlon Renovations, Super Value Home Centre, and a number of independent professionals from across Jamaica.

One of the participating contractors, Maline Leyow,  praised the experience, stating that “This kind of training is invaluable. We don’t often get a chance to go behind the product label and really understand how to get the best out of a paint like Magicote. Being able to see and use it ourselves, with guidance, makes a big difference on the job, and will allow us to better serve our customers.”

The two day workshop discussed in depth the importance of surface preparation, which one has to inspect & assess, clean, scrape and sand, repairing and filling, priming/sealing, and masking and protection. Additionally, the workshop covered other aspects of painting, including paint types, application techniques, safety practices and business considerations.

“This workshop aimed to equip painting contractors with essential and improved skills and knowledge for successful home and commercial painting projects. Timed perfectly for the upcoming Christmas season, when many Jamaicans tend to spruce up their homes, this event allows all participants to leverage the information shared in delivering the Berger promise of Lasting Beauty and Protection for their future projects,” commented Williams.

As Berger Paints continues to lead in product innovation and industry training, events like the Contractor Academy reinforce its position as a true partner to Jamaica’s construction professionals, ensuring every finish is one that lasts.
