Hundreds of Jamaicans accessed free health screenings, education and wellness support on Thursday, July 30, as Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) brought healthcare directly to the heart of downtown Kingston through its Health & Wellness Fair at Saint William Grant Park.
The event formed part of the hospital’s 250th anniversary celebrations, under the theme Celebrating 250 Years of Healing Jamaica, with the community health fair serving as one of several initiatives celebrating its legacy of public service and its commitment to improving the health of communities across Jamaica.
The fair brought together KPH departments, including the Renal Unit, Nursing Department, Physiotherapy Department, Dietary Services and the Know Your Numbers initiative, alongside several healthcare and corporate partners. These included NAJ & Health Services Co-Operative Credit Union Limited, Bellevue Hospital, Jamaica Cancer Society, Surgix Jamaica Ltd, National Blood Bank, National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), Emergency Medical Services and Safety Training Institute, Eye Q Optical, Eyewear by Alexandria Co, VM Group, First Heritage Credit Union, Kool 97 FM and others.
Throughout the day, members of the public accessed a range of free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments, blood cholesterol testing, vision tests and Pap smears. Visitors also benefited from health education services and had the opportunity to engage directly with healthcare professionals, ask questions about their health and receive guidance on prevention, early detection and reducing their risk of chronic illnesses.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of KPH, Mr. Dwayne Francis, said the health fair reflected the hospital’s enduring commitment to improving the health of Jamaicans and giving back to the communities it serves. “For 250 years, KPH has been a pillar of healthcare in Jamaica, providing compassionate, quality care to generations of patients. As we celebrate this historic milestone, we remain committed to extending our services beyond the hospital and into the community,” he said.
Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, commended KPH’s clinical and support staff for their unwavering dedication, describing the institution as Jamaica’s leading trauma centre. He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to building a new Kingston Public Hospital that will continue the institution’s legacy of excellence for future generations.
The Health & Wellness Fair underscored the importance of preventive healthcare and community outreach. KPH’s 250th anniversary celebrations will continue throughout the year with additional commemorative activities, culminating in the hospital’s official anniversary observance on December 14.
